AMD vs Intel in Prime Discipline

Although AMD had no new information on the upcoming Zen-3 processors or “Big Navi” at yesterday’S CES presentation, the chip manufacturer caused a Furore. On stage, a new processor for Laptops was introduced, which could become a major Problem for Intel.

Ryzen 4800U: new AMD processor beats Intel in its Prime discipline

During CES, numerous technology companies will show their latest innovations and give an outlook on which products can be expected in the coming months and years. AMD also did not miss this opportunity and invited to a Show lasting about 50 minutes, while managing director Dr. Lisa Su not only presented a new Threadripper processor with 64 cores but also presented a Laptop Chip that could cause sweat beads on Intel’s forehead.

The power-saving mobile processor for Notebooks goes by the name of Ryzen 7 4800U and is based on AMD’s new 7-nm manufacturing process. The processor offers such a big performance boost compared to the previous models that even Intel’s current competitor chip, the i7-1065G7, is inferior to the new AMD processor in a discipline in which the industry leader otherwise quite clearly sets the tone: Single-Thread Performance. In direct comparison, the Ryzen 4800U is about 4 percent superior to the i7-1065G7 in the single-Thread test of Cinebench R20.

Amd-vs-Intel-2

This value is especially important because many programs and games still do not manage to distribute the resulting work evenly among all cores, but rather bundle them as a single instruction stream. In other words, individual cores are significantly more stressed than others, and the performance of a single thread is gaining in importance.

New Laptop processor from AMD: 8 cores and still energy-saving

But AMD’s new Laptop processor is not only convincing in this area. The other technical data and performance values announced at CES are also impressive:

Model name: AMD Ryzen 7 4800U
8 Cores, 16 Threads
Base Clock Rate: 1.8 GHz / Boost Clock Rate: 4.2 GHz
TDP: 15 Watt
8 Radeon cores in the integrated graphics unit

Due to the 8 processor cores and the virtual core doubling, the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U leaves its direct competitors in the rain, especially in Multi-Thread applications-and even in graphics-intensive computing work, the Chip is superior to the Intel processor. It is also amazing that AMD has managed to keep the power consumption of the Ryzen 7 4800U low with all this Power. The new Ryzen 4000 Chips will be twice as energy-efficient as the mobile Ryzen 3000 processors-particularly important for use in Laptops.

While in the Laptop Segment Ryzen processors have so far been rather a niche existence, that looks completely different with the Desktop processors:

The first Laptops with AMD’s new laptop processor are scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of 2020, with more than 100 systems to be installed on the Chip by the end of the year.
