The increase in cyber attacks during the epidemic is well known. But the numbers released by computer security software company, McAfee, are alarming.
The company maintains a COVID-19 Threats dashboard. According to the data, about 762,187 threats were received in India between 2 May 2020 and 18 April 2021.
Globally, India is among the top three countries where McAfee has received major threats. The US is the highest, with more than 2.5 million acquisitions, followed by Spain at about two million.
Many of these threats were Trojan, a malware program that allows criminals to gain access to the company’s programs and devices.
For example, malware can be on your mobile device or computer and steal sensitive financial data such as bank accounts and credit card details.
Threats have been found worldwide at 10.45 million. Of these, 8,184 were different. “Public events have increased 100% in Europe from Q3 to Q4 2020. Asian events have increased by 84%, and in North America have increased by 36%,” the report said.
“The volume of malware threats detected by McAfee Labs is estimated at 588 per minute, an increase of 169 per minute (40%) in the third quarter of 2020. The fourth quarter volume had 648 threats per minute, an increase of 60 threats per minute (10%), “the report said.
The report warned by clicking the unverified links and opening the external email attachment. “Remind and check your employees’ interactions by clicking on unconfirmed links and including external email attachments and the cost of obtaining it, “the report said.
