In the epic battle film “Greyhound,” Tom Hanks portrays a veteran American naval veteran, as the first captain, tasked with guarding a convoy of 37 ships carrying thousands of soldiers and much-needed supplies in the deceptive Atlantic waters during World War II. For five days without air cover, the captain and his small fleet of three navigable troops would have to cross the “Black Pit,” battling Nazi boats and protecting their ships and their precious soldiers. The “Greyhound” was inspired by events during the Atlantic War, which took place in the early months of the American alliance with Great Britain and the Allied Forces. Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue played with Hanks. The film was written by Tom Hanks, directed by Aaron Schneider, and directed by Gary Goetzman.
Oscar nomination for “Greyhound” follows recognition by BAFTA, in which the film was nominated for Special Visual Effects and Sound; the Visual Effects Society and the editors of Motion Picture Sound Editors, where it is nominated in two categories for each award; and the Cinema Audio Society, designated as Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. The film also received nominations at the People’s Choice Awards, Critics Choice Super Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and numerous critic groups.
